What is Augmented Reality?

What is AR?

Augmented Reality is a technology that allows interaction between the real environment and the virtual environment, giving a new perspective on the relationship between these two worlds. It’s like an extension of the simulated real world.

The main feature of this technology is the visualization of a virtual environment (for example, small animals in larger size) and its interaction with the reality of the real environment.

It was with the Pokémon Go that augmented reality entered the lives of millions of people around the world. The augmented reality is also present in the digital characters created on our own face, recognized automatically through the camera of the mobile phone and the messages we exchange every day. This ‘reality’ that adds digital information to the real world promises to revolutionize the way we deal with technology.

The forecasts indicate that it can move 340 billion dollars over the next three years. With virtual glasses, augmented reality allows for 360-degree 3D real-world experience. According to experts, the revolution consists of the possibility of being able to manipulate virtual objects without them existing in a real world and should grow, on average, 180% per year over the next five years.

Applications of augmented reality
The fields of application are many. It has added value in the maintenance industry, where it overlays virtual information to any damaged object. For example, in the automobile industry, it can show all the components of a car. Big companies like Google, Microsoft and Apple already have projects with this technology that already reach millions. In mass consumption, it is already possible to decorate the house by pointing a smartphone or tablet to the room and see how the furniture is that we intend to buy.

Augmented reality is also being used for leisure and education. For example, some museums use tour guides with this technology and in some video game games. In mobile computing, applications are developed for driving or locating people.

Medicine is another field of application. Surgery performed by robots is a clear example, since the surgeon manipulates the robot at a distance to perform the procedure on a patient. In psychology, this system is being employed to treat some emotional disorders. For example, in the case of patients with cockroach or spider phobia, the augmented reality is used so that these people can overcome the aversion of these animals.

The future
This technology presents great possibilities and can change the future in many aspects of life. Currently, there are very advanced projects related to new ways of watching television, as well as in decoration, engineering or medicine. In fact, models of augmented reality glasses already exist, and their field of action can change our way of relationship and understanding of reality.
